What is the difference between Coaching and Counselling or Therapy?

Coaching is process-driven and action-orientated and focuses on providing clients with the skills, tools and ways of thinking to inspire and empower them to live their best lives. A key aspect of ‘coaching’ is to create the space for clients to reflect on what they want from their lives and or careers and why. The coach provides the how to get from where they are in the present to where they want to be in the future.

Counselling is more content-driven and whilst time will be spent working on the here and now,' the client may wish to focus on past issues that are currently holding them back in the present.

Therapy is the right fit for addressing trauma and diagnosable mental health concerns. All areas however can overlap and be complementary to one another.

Is your Coaching via Zoom or face to face?

I am able to provide both services, but coaching via Zoom seems to be the most popular choice with young people, because it’s easier to access and has greater flexibility in terms of timing. My office at Attadale Business Centre is available on a Thursday late afternoon onwards if face to face is preferable.

How do you Coach young people?

In coaching, it’s essential that young people don’t feel like they are being ‘fixed’ and that something is wrong with them. That is why ‘listening’ and the ability to build a good rapport with them is so important.

For me, it’s all about ‘collaboration’ and working with a younger person, rather than on a young person, to help them overcome ‘personal blocks’ and move forward in their lives.

Why is ‘Coaching’ important and why can’t I take on that role as a parent?

As a parent, it can be very challenging to see ‘the wood for the trees’ when it comes to our kids (no matter what age). As a parent myself, I know how emotionally involved I am with my two sons and how it can cloud my judgement.

As a coach and mentor, I have enough professional distance and experience to be able to effectively guide and support your son or daughter in the journey ahead.

What if an issue comes up which is outside your area of expertise?

If I have any concerns whatsoever, it will usually come up in the first coaching session. If that were to occur, I will then express those concerns to the parents and with their consent and refer them to trained health professional in a particular field.

In addition, there is a form for parents with teens (under the age of 18) and young adults over 18 to fill in which requires current medications and the professional help they may have received over the past two or more years.
